A nose job (technically called a Rhinoplasty) is surgery on the nose to change its shape or improve its function. Rhinoplasty is a facial cosmetic procedure, usually performed to enhance the appearance or reconstruct the nose. During Rhinoplasty, the nasal cartilages and bones are modified, or tissue is added, to improve the visual appeal of the nose. 

Rhinoplasty is also frequently performed to repair nasal fractures. When Rhinoplasty is used to repair nasal fractures, the goal is to restore pre-injury appearance of the nose. Septorhinoplasty is a related procedure performed for patients who also have nasal obstruction. This procedure removes any internal obstructions and stabilizes structures that may be blocking nasal breathing. It also improves the facial appearance.

There are two types of Rhinoplasty: 

• Closed Rhinoplasty:  Closed Rhinoplasty is often done when there is a bump on the bridge of the nose. Small incisions are made inside the nostrils, so that no external scars are visible.

• Open Rhinoplasty:  Open Rhinoplasty involves an incision between your nostrils to manipulate the skin and nasal structure. This type of rhinoplasty is often performed when grafts or implants must be used.

A nose job is usually done as an outpatient procedure, either under general anesthesia or local anesthesia. After Rhinoplasty, a nasal splint is advised for the first week. You can expect swelling and some bruising around the eyes after surgery that will begin to improve after the third day. It may last up to two weeks. A little swelling of the nose is noticed. This will go away over the next six months. The final shape of your nose will be apparent around 6 to 12 weeks after surgery.

You may return to your social activities as soon as within two to three weeks without any recognizable signs that you had a procedure done.
